Gloves are worn by people of all ages and all professions, variously for protection from cold, for hygiene, and for safety. But the duty gloves worn by a policeman belong to a class of its own because it is a tactical weapon as well as a piece of protective body armor.
Policemen are skating on thin ice much of their lives so that all their apparels are designed to face the challenges of this life on the edges. Duty gloves are part of the tactical gear designed to suit this lifestyle, and come in several designs. There are disturbance control duty gloves, which will be lined by cut resistant material, and will have extra padding on the finger portion and the backside of the glove. These duty gloves withstand force better, and provide for good grip. They also fit well as there are adjustable straps and hooks on the wrist portion.
Then there are hard knuckle duty gloves with knuckles made of hard polymer. The knuckle portion will have a goatskin covering in some cases. The middle finger and index finger portions of this duty gloves will be strengthened to afford better grip and in some cases there will be a lining with perspiration absorbing material. These are mostly made of cow leather and will have an additional layer of protection for the whole of the palm and part of the fingers, with extra leather wrapping between the index finger and thumb. These duty gloves are quite useful for policemen and army personnel, as well as for ordinary people engaged in any fast rope activities. FASTAC gloves have wrist straps that let the user keep the gloves attached to the hands even after he has taken it off.
Duty gloves can be slash resistant gloves with an inner lining of slash resistant material. Or it can be breathable tactile gloves, which allow easy finger movement, and good touch sensation and are ideal summer wear. Another type of duty gloves are patrol gloves which also will be slash resistant, and provide very good fingertip sensation. These gloves have a seamless pattern with the leather extending from the palm, wrapping around each finger. These patrol duty gloves, also known as gladiator gloves, are popularly used by policemen entrusted with the job of transporting prisoners, or those working in correction facilities.
Duty gloves can also be fluid resistant gloves, which offer a multilayered protection. These will be made of waterproof material but will have a breathable lining. Then there are winter gloves for cold weather patrol, which will have layers of insulation. In the material that goes into the making of winter gloves, deerskin is a common choice. There are also extrication gloves, flash resistant gloves, and bike gloves, which form excellent duty gloves for policemen involved in various operations. Duty gloves already span a really broad spectrum, and more and more new models are being designed every day.
